Into the Void

INTO THE VOID

INTO THE VOID is a facilitated practice session for clowns who want to improve their ability to work with nothing but themselves when they go on stage. No planning, no props, no setups, no costumes. Come as you are and make discoveries in the moment!

The session starts with some warmups and stretches, then we get into save-the-show style drills to keep you on your toes. In the second half of the session, each performer will get five minutes on stage to try stuff out in order to discover what works (and what doesn’t!).

The intention is for you as a performer to strengthen your ability to be present with the audience, to act on impulse in the moment, to embrace the flop and then recover.

This is a drop-in class. No registration required!

It is recommended that you have taken at least one clown/idiot class or workshop to participate (e.g. Brunch, Play Play, classes or workshops with John Beale, etc.).

Fee is $10 per class, in cash or by e-transfer when you arrive.

About the facilitator:

Emily Jeffers is an actor and clown who has trained at L’Ecole Philippe Gaulier and with instructors from the Idiot Workshop LA, including John Gilkey, Kevin Krieger, Gemma Soldati and Ian Bratschie. She has also trained with Aitor Basauri (of Spymonkey Theatre), Pedro Fabião, John Beale, Deanna Fleysher, Chad Damiani and Eric Davis (Red Bastard). She is known for her characters Bitty-Bat, Sheonardo DiCaprio, and Evangelina Peppermint, and has performed at Toronto Fringe Festival and Toronto Sketchfest. Like you, she is a learner and performer of the beautiful art that is clown.
